Day 1 Siem Reap - Arrival
Arrive at Siem Reap airport and transfer to the hotel . Visit the Roluos Group. The monuments of Roluos, which served as the capital of Indravarman I (reigned 877-89), are among the earliest large, permanent temples built by the Khmers and mark the beginning of Khmer classical art. Preah Ko erected by Indravarman I in the late 9th century dedicated by the King to his ancestors in 880. Bakong the largest and most interesting of the Roluos group temples, with his active Buddhist monastery just to the north of the east entrance. Lolei built on an islet in the center of a large reservoir (now rice fields) by Yasovarman I, the founder to the first city at Angkor. Overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap
Day 2 Banteay Srei - Banteay Samre – Preah Khan – Neak Pean – Siem Reap (B, L)
Breakfast at hotel, drive to the typical Khmer countryside and visit Banteay Srei temple (10th c), regarded as the jewel in the crown of Classical Khmer Art. Continue to visit Banteay Samre, one of the most complete complexes at Angkor due to restoration using the method of "anastylosis". The name Samre refers to an ethnic group of mountain people, who inhabited the region at the base of Phnom Kulen and were probably related to the Khmers. The proportions of Banteay Samre are splendid. A unique feature is an interior moat with laterite paving, which when filled with water must have given an ethereal atmosphere to the temple. Lunch at restaurant. In the afternoon, you will continue your temple visits to Preah Khan. Built by the King Jayavarman VII, Preah Khan is, like Ta Prohm, a place of towered enclosures and shoulder hugging corridors. Unlike Ta Prohm, however, the temple of Prea Khan is in a reasonable state of preservation and ongoing restoration efforts should maintain and even improve this situation. Overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap
Day 3 Angkor Wat (B,L)
Breakfast at hotel. Morning, visit the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor: Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian flag and the 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. Angkor Wat's five towers symbolize Meru's five peaks - the enclosing wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world and the surrounding moat, the ocean beyond. Lunch at local restaurant. Visit the South Gate (with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk), the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century), Bayon Temple (unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. Sunset at Angkor Wat. Overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap
Day 4 : Siem Reap - Beng Mealea - Koh Ker (B,L,D)
We journey northeast from Siem Reap to the massive jungle temple of Beng Mealea, the size and scale of Angkor Wat but utterly swallowed by the jungle. We clamber about this titanic of temples that feels just like it would have when discovered by the first explorers. We continue to Koh Ker, a 10th century capital abandoned in the remote north of Cambodia for more than a thousand years. Our team set up camp for us, while we enjoy a visit to the pyramid temple of Prasat Thom and take in sunset. Our overnight camp is right outside the walls of the temple.
Day 5 : Koh Ker - Tbeng Meanchey (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we continue to explore the many temples at this incredible site, including the beautiful Prasat Krahom, covered by jungle. After lunch, we head east through Kulen district to the provincial capital of Preah Vihear, Tbeng Meanchey. We visit a local silk project for the disabled and disadvantaged called Joom Noon and spend the night in a local hotel.
Day 6: Tbeng Meanchey - Preah Vihear (B,L,D)
Today we have a long journey north to the mountaintop temple of Preah Vihear. Leaving Tbeng Meanchey, we take a road north towards the Thai border before reaching the Dangrek Mountains which form a natural border between these two neighbours. We drive slowly and carefully up the steep road to the summit. Then we explore this majestic sight when all the other tourists have departed back to Thailand. Set on the cliffs of the Dangrek range, this is undoubtedly the most dramatic location of any of the ancient Khmer temples. The views are endless and we take in sunset over the Cambodian plains below.
We camp overnight at the foot of the mountain.
Day 7: Preah Vihear - Anlong Veng - Siem Reap (B,L,D)
We enjoy the stunning sunset at the mountain summit before breakfast. We journey back down the mountain before continuing west to Anlong Veng, one of the last Khmer Rouge bases to fall to government forces. We stop here for lunch and visit the house of Ta Mok, former military commander of the Khmer Rouge. We then continue south to Siem Reap, arriving as the sun goes down. Overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap
